The number of software engineers in the US is expected to rise to nearly 2.5 million this year from 2.2 million last year, according to the Software Engineering Institute (SEI).
The number of applications received per month from software engineers has been on a tear for years, up from just under 300,000 in 2015.
SEI expects this year’s growth to reach 1.5 percent to 1.8 percent, up nearly 20 percent from the year before.
The hiring surge is driven by new hires, the company says.
SEIs estimates that the hiring of software developers will grow from 1.4 million to 2.3 million by 2019.
SEi predicts the hiring rate of software engineering will be about 2.4 percent to 2 percent, and it expects to double the number of people working on software engineering from this year to 2 million this fall.SEIs estimates the US will add nearly a million software engineers to its ranks this year.
The average annual salary for software engineers will be $70,000.
