CBS News’ Chris Wallace reports that a cyber attack targeting the US voting system has caused “major disruptions” in the presidential election.
The cyberattack is a “threat to our democratic process,” Wallace reports, adding that “there’s no question that it’s been a significant setback.”
Wallace adds that the US “is in a very, very different place right now” from before the hack.
He says that “it is a clear signal” that the cyber attack “has affected the election system in a significant way.”
“It’s clear that our democracy is at risk.”
The network reports that the attack “hit our voting system” at a “critical time,” and that “the integrity of our electoral process is at stake.”
Wallace reports: “The White House has acknowledged the impact of the cyberattack, but says that it is too soon to know whether it affected the outcome of the election.”
The White House did not immediately respond to CBS News request for comment.
Wallace says that he “can’t be sure” whether the election is going to be affected, but adds that “in the absence of proof, you have to assume it is.”
The attack came as Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) was hospitalized.
CNN reports that Wasserman Schultz has been diagnosed with a “significant and potentially life-threatening illness.”
Wallace says “she has been hospitalized, and that she has been told to stay home and rest, and she has a “very high probability of dying in the next few days.
“He adds that she “is being treated at a hospital and will remain there.
“He reports that “as of Monday, she is still under observation in a critical condition.
“CNN reports “She has been treated and discharged.
“Wallace concludes by saying that “this is a very serious, potentially life threatening situation.
