By Kate McCarter and Emily MaitlisIn 2016, the average budgeting budget software company in Canada, from a company like Budget Software to a small startup, was only two employees.
But that number has grown by 10% since then.
For small businesses, the growth is particularly steep, with a whopping 43% increase in 2016 alone.
In 2016, we saw a total of 12,000 small businesses fail to pay their bills in one month.
Now, the number is up to nearly 40,000.
And in the first half of 2017, the government was asked to set aside $300 million to help small businesses.
This was the most in recent memory of any government funding for small businesses’ budgeting.
And according to a recent study by the University of Toronto, this is a major factor in why companies are failing to pay bills, or not paying their bills at all.
In 2017, there were 3,600 small businesses that had not paid their bills for the year, according to the research, which was released last week.
About three-quarters of these small businesses were in Ontario and the GTA.
It was the biggest year for Ontario’s small businesses in five years.
And this was the first time Ontario has seen the number of small businesses fall in five consecutive years.
The Ontario government is spending nearly $600 million on small businesses this year, but the results of that spending are not what we would expect.
The Ontario Small Business Association says that’s because of a lack of tools and support for small business owners.
And that’s a big problem for small companies in Ontario.
“A lot of small companies, they’re not used to having a small budget and a small staff, and that’s something that’s really important,” said John Gourlay, a small business owner in Mississauga.
“They’re a little bit lost in the shuffle, and the small businesses are the ones that are struggling, and it’s really hurting them,” he said.
So why are these small business budgets so much lower?
One big factor is the availability of the budgeting tools available to small businesses right now.
“If you don’t have a budget, you don and you don will never be able to meet the deadlines you need to meet, and you’ll be out of business,” said Mark Blanchard, the president and CEO of Budget Software.
“It’s a tough problem to solve.”
As a result, the small business community is asking the government to create tools that allow businesses to use the budget tools they have today, but are missing the ones they have available now.
Blanchar is asking government to provide a small-business budgeting tool that is accessible to small business through the budget portal.
“What we’re asking for is a simple, clear, easy-to-use tool that allows small businesses to set the right budgets and communicate with the right people to get that budget set,” said Blanching.
He says small business users don’t always understand the impact of budgeting on their businesses, and they are often frustrated with the bureaucracy and the paperwork that goes with the process.
“It’s an important challenge for small-to moderate-sized businesses to navigate in the budget process,” said Gourlain.
“Small business owners are struggling with the challenges of managing a budget and budgeting and paying their rent, but we’re all still struggling with that same struggle.”
It’s important for businesses to be able in the beginning to have a clear plan to keep the budget on track, said Blancheard.
And for small owners to be sure they’re doing things correctly to ensure they are on budget and their employees are on payroll.
“We are all struggling with this,” said Fazil Zohari, a self-employed freelancer and entrepreneur.
“And we’re working really hard, but unfortunately the budget is a little too complicated for small to medium businesses.”
The Government of Canada will announce a small businesses budgeting platform next month.
And it’s clear that the government has heard from many small businesses who are struggling to manage their budgets.
